The Kakapo is a flightless, the world's heaviest parrot, possibly the oldest living bird, and has a subsonic mating boom that can travel several kilometers. The kakapo can be found in New Zealand and every year people from all around the world come to see them. Volunteers give their time to save them from extinction. Most of the Kakapo recovery takes place on a remote, predator-free island off southern New Zealand.

The Kakapo possesses several remarkable traits:

• It's nocturnal, meaning it's most active at night
• It's herbivorous, mainly feeding on native plants, fruits, and seeds
• It has a distinctive musty odor, which helps it blend with its environment and avoid predators
• It has soft, greenish-brown plumage, providing excellent camouflage in its forest habitat
• It's highly endangered, with a critically low population requiring intensive conservation efforts
• It has a long lifespan, with individuals capable of living for several decades in the wild

These unique characteristics contribute to the Kakapo's status as one of the most fascinating and endangered birds in the world.
